- At the tip of the free end of the eleventh rib.
- At the anterior end of the eleventh rib on the mid-axillary line.
- On the lateral side of the abdomen, below the free end of the eleventh rib.
- Directly anterior and inferior to the free end of the eleventh rib.
- When the arm is bent at the elbow and held against the side, the tip of the elbow roughly corresponds to the position of the point.
- To locate the free end of the eleventh rib, first place the entire hand on the upper abdomen and with gentle finger pressure palpate downwards along the costal margin until the end of the eleventh rib is located just above the level of the umbilicus.
- This point usually lies on or near the mid-axillary line which is drawn vertically down from the apex of the axilla (HT-1 Jiquan).
- Straight or slanted insertion, 0.8 to 1 cun. Sensation: distended feeling at the side of the abdomen, possibly extending to the posterior abdominal wall.
- Caution: The right lobe of the Liver is below this point on the right side of the body. Caution must be exercised to avoid needling too deeply. Deep below this point on the left side, is the lower end of the Spleen. Excessively deep insertion on this side must also be avoided, particularly in patients with enlarged Liver or Spleen.
- Puncture perpendicularly 0.5 to 0.8 cun.
- Transverse or oblique insertion medially or laterally (along the line of the rib) 0.5 to 1 cun.
- Moxibustion is applicable.
