This is an herb of the Right Kidney and the Ming Men.
Both Hu Lu Ba and Fr. Foeniculi Xiao Hui Xiang are aromatic, warm, expel Lower Jiao Cold and treat bulging disorders and are often used together. Xiao Hui Xiang enters the Middle Jiao to enhance appetite, settle nausea and alleviate abdominal pain and distention and enters the Lower Jiao to warm and treat all types of bulging disorders. It can be excessively drying in large doses. Hu Lu Ba is limited to the Lower Jiao and is basically a strongly warming Yang tonic with a mild aroma that drives out lurking Cold Qi accumulated in the Lower Jiao.
Hu Lu Ba, Rx. Aconiti Lateralis Preparata Zhi Fu Zi and Rx. Curculiginis Xian Mao all warm Kidney Yang. Hu Lu Ba is the mildest.
This herb has shown anti-tumoral activity, especially in cervical and liver cancer.
Dry-fried Fenugreek Seed Chao Hu Lu Ba is somewhat less bitter and drying and somewhat more tonifying of the Kidney Yang, while still resolving Dampness. It is less able to expel Wind-Dampness and is appropriate for treating Deficiency Cold of the Kidneys with fullness and distention in the abdomen and ribs.
Salt-prepared Fenugreek Seed Yan Chao Hu Lu Ba directly enters the Kidneys, enhancing the Yang tonification property. It is used to treat testicular pain from Cold-type bulging disorders, impotence, lower backache due to Kidney Yang Deficiency and dysmenorrhea.
