POINT: GB-8 (GALL BLADDER-8)  

NAME: SHUAIGU

English: Leading Valley
Also Known As: Flowing Valley
Leading to Valley

LOCATION:

  • Superior to the apex of the auricle, 1.5 cun within the hairline.
  • Directly above the apex of the ear and 1.5 cun above the natural hairline.
  • In the temporal region, in the slight depression, 1 cun directly above the apex of the ear.
    Note: fold the ear forward to define the apex. Fold the ear so that the posterior part of the upper helix directly covers the anterior part of the upper helix. Do not push the whole of the ear forward.

NEEDLING:

  • Puncture subcutaneously 0.3 to 0.5 cun.
  • Moxibustion is applicable.
  • Transverse insertion 1 to 2 cun.
  • Transverse insertion 0.5 to 1.5 cun, This point may be joined by through-needling to M-HN-9 Taiyang.
    Note: This point may be needled in any direction depending on the symptomology. The needle should be inserted deep to the subcutaneous layer, into the loose areolar tissue adjacent to the bone of the skull, rather than more shallowly.

NOTES:

  • This is a widely used local point for ear problems from Liver Yang Rising.
  • This is an important for treating temporal or parietal headache and heaviness, especially when unilateral.
  • It is particularly indicated when Exterior Wind Attacks the head or for Liver Yang Rising, Liver Fire or Liver Wind causing one-sided head ache.
