- This herb has a weaker effect than Rx. Notoginseng San Qi .
- This herb is primarily used for hematemesis or hemoptysis due to Blood Stasis and for postpartum bleeding.
- It stops bleeding from metal wounds and expels a dead fetus and afterbirth, but severely injures Yin and Blood.
- Hua Rui Shi , Rx. Notoginseng San Qi, Crinis Carbonisatus Xue Yu Tan, Pollen Typhae Pu Huang and Rx. Rubiae Qian Cao all stop bleeding and remove Stasis. They are often combined for all types of bleeding due to Stasis or when one must stop the bleeding without leaving any residual Stasis.Hua Rui Shi removes Stasis and stops bleeding by gathering and transforming the Blood. San Qi is one of the strongest of these herbs. It also stops pain and reduces swelling and is superior in the treatment of trauma. Xue Yu Tan generates flesh and helps wounds and ulcers heal over. Pu Huang promotes urination. Qian Cao cools the Blood and regulates menstruation. It is used when Heat in the Blood leads to bleeding and Stasis by drying the Blood.
- Calcined Ophicalcitum Duan Hua Rui Shi is more easily powdered and is less sour and astringent and less able to upset digestion. It is preferred for internal use It may also be used topically.
- Vinegar-calcined Ophicalcitum Cu Duan Hua Rui Shi is better able to astringe in order to stop bleeding.
- Sulfur-calcined Liu Huang Duan Hua Rui Shi is mainly used to treat sores topically and for bleeding due to trauma.
