POINT: SI-18 (SMALL INTESTINE-18)

NAME: QUANLIAO

English: Cheek Bone Crevice
Also Known As: Zygoma Crevice
Cheek Bone Opening
Cheek Seam

LOCATION:

  • Directly below the outer canthus, in the depression at the lower border of the zygomatic bone.
  • At the middle of the inferior margin of the zygomatic bone, level with LI-20 Yingxiang, directly below the outer canthus of the eye.

NEEDLING:

  • Transverse insertion joined to points such as ST-4 Dicang, ST-7 Xiaguan, LI-20 Yingxiang and ST-6 Jiache.
  • Perpendicular insertion 0.5 to 0.7 cun.
  • Puncture perpendicularly 0.5 to 0.8 cun.
  • Slanted insertion 1 to 1.5 cun.

COMMAND FUNCTIONS:

  • Meeting point of the San Jiao channel
  • Tendo muscular control point for the leg Yang channels

ACTIONS:

  • Eliminates Wind
  • Alleviates pain
  • Clears Heat
  • Reduces swelling

INDICATIONS:

  • Deviation of mouth and eyes
  • Ceaseless twitching of the eyelids
  • Pain of the face
  • Swelling of the cheek with toothache
  • Inability to chew
  • Abscess of the lip
  • Red face
  • Yellow eyes
  • Bell's palsy
  • Excess blinking
  • Tic
  • Trigeminal neuralgia
  • Facial paralysis
  • Toothache
  • Extremely red cheeks
  • Swelling of the jaw

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

  • According to a number of both classical and modern texts, moxibustion is forbidden on this point.
  • Other sources say to use moxibustion with caution.

NOTES:

  • This is an important and commonly used point for the treatment of facial disorders such as facial paralysis, tic or trigeminal neuralgia.
