- 3 cun lateral to the laryngeal prominence, lateral to ST-9 Renying and in the posterior margin of the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
- On the lateral side of the neck, level with the tip of the Adam's apple, between the sternal head and clavicular head of the m. sternocleidomastoideus.
- Level with the laryngeal prominence, located just between the two heads of the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
Note: Palpation of the sternal and clavicular heads is made easier if the patient turns the head away from the side to be needled while you apply resistance to the chin. In females, palpate the depression formed by the lower border of the hyoid bone and the upper border of the thyroid cartilage at the midline. The laryngeal prominence lies just below this. The point may be located 3 cun (one handbreadth) from the laryngeal prominence.
- Straight insertion, 0.5 to 1 cun. Sensation distended and constricted feeling in the throat.
- Puncture perpendicularly 0.3 to 0.5 cun.
- Oblique insertion, 0.5 to 0.8 cun.
- Caution: deeper needling may puncture the carotid artery or jugular vein.
- Moxibustion is applicable.
