- This herb is usually used with Rx. Angelicae Sinensis Dang Gui to move the Blood and stop pain.
- It can be used with sedative herbs to treat restlessness.
- Fr. Akebiae Ba Yue Zha spreads Liver Qi and eliminates clumping. It is bitter and neutral and enters the Stomach and Liver channels. It treats Liver/Stomach Disharmony, hypochondriac and hernia pain, scrofula, breast and digestive tract cancer, urinary difficulty and Stone Lin. The dosage is 6-12g.
- This herb is more effective at draining Heat than Medulla Tetrapanacis Tong Cao.
- Both Mu Tong and Ze Xie promote the flow of fluid pathways and are commonly used together. Mu Tong clears Fire from the Heart and Small Intestine channels and unblocks the flow of Qi and Blood. Ze Xie clears ministerial Fire in the Kidney channel.
- Both Mu Tong and Succinum Hu Po drain Fire from the Small Intestine and promote urination to treat rough urination and hematuria due to Small Intestine channel Fire, clear Fire from the Heart channel, dredge and unblock the blood vessels and can be used for amenorrhea due to Blood Stasis. Mu Tong is used primarily for mouth ulcers, red eyes and irritability. it also promotes lactation and treats Damp-Heat painful obstruction. Hu Po clears the Heart and settles fright and is mainly used for spasms and seizures due to Heat from constraint and palpitations, insomnia and disturbing dreams. It also treats hematomas due to trauma as well as sores and toxic swellings.
- Both Mu Tong and Medulla Junci Deng Xin Cao clear and drain Heart Fire and direct Small Intestine Heat out through the urine. They are used together to treat Lin syndrome. Mu Tong is bitter, cold and more powerful than Deng Xin Cao. It treats mouth and tongue ulcers and swollen, red eyes. It also unblocks the flow of Qi and Blood to treat amenorrhea, insufficient lactation or painful obstruction. Deng Xin Cao is milder and its treatment of the Heart is primarily aimed at children's night terrors due to Heart Heat. It also drains Lung Heat to treat sore throat.
- Dry-fried Caulis Akebia Chao Mu Tong is not so cold and therefore does not injure the Stomach, but still cools Heat and facilitates urination without draining Yuan Qi.
