- Hb. Ephedrae Ma Huang is diaphoretic, Rx. Ephedrae Ma Huang Gen is anhidrotic.
- Both Ma Huang Gen and Concha Ostreae Mu Li restrain and inhibit sweating associated with Deficiency disorders of the Qi and Yin. Ma Huang Gen restrains the outward discharge in order to stop sweating and is limited to this single action. Mu Li is heavy , inhibits the Yin and anchors the Yang and is especially appropriate for Yin Deficiency nightsweats. It also quiets the Spirit.
- Both Ma Huang Gen and Fr. Tritici Levis Fu Xiao Mai stop sweating and are often combined to treat spontaneous sweating and nightsweats. Fu Xiao Mai augments Qi and clears Heat to stop sweating, while Ma Huang Gen astringes. it has no ability to tonify Qi, cool the Heart or clear Heat.
